In the project "Dredging Storkaia, Molde," Molde and Romsdal Port Authority IKS has engaged Sjøentreprenøren to increase the sailing depth in front of Storkaia.
The project was carried out as an execution assignment with dredging work during the period until June 2025 and includes dredging down to level –9.5 LAT in the first phase. The dredging area covered approximately 1,200–1,500 m², with an estimated volume of about 600–800 bcm. The slopes in the area were established with an inclination of 1:1.3, to ensure necessary stability.
The purpose of the measure is to increase the depth so that Storkaia can accommodate larger cruise ships. The work has included establishing the rig area and access, dredging down to the designed level with bottom profile control, as well as handling of dredged masses in accordance with current environmental requirements. Stability against the quay front has been checked, in accordance with geotechnical calculations, to ensure safety.
Ground investigations have documented soft masses over firm layers, and the stability calculation is verified with PLAXIS, where the safety factor (SF) is calculated to be ≥ 1.35. The sediments mainly consist of sand with low TOC values, and moderate levels of environmental substances PAH and TBT have been detected, which have been handled according to the requirements.
The project has been completed according to the designed level and volume and was delivered on time without deviation. The overall result helps strengthen Molde port's capacity for larger cruise calls, while environmental requirements and safety have been maintained throughout the process.
