Harstad Havn KF in Troms and Finnmark county upgraded its port facility Larsneset in the centre. In front of parts of the quay front, dredging and blasting were to be carried out to achieve an appropriate depth.
The project was the first of two contracts for the rehabilitation and expansion of the Hurtigrutekaien in Harstad. We were tasked with dredging to an appropriate navigational depth along and outside Larsneset quay.
First, 3000 tonnes of contaminated material were dredged and sent to a landfill at Reno-Vest AS in Sortland. There were strict requirements for turbidity here. We deployed two turbidity meters supplied by COWI. This was carried out by Caesar.
Then, 6000m3 of rock was blasted. Blast rock was dumped in an approved sea disposal site at Stangnes. 355 guide holes and 355 contour holes were drilled. Some of the blasts were conducted with the drilling rig on Mjø II, with loading and connections made by divers. This was because we had to coordinate with Hurtigruten, which called in 1-2 times a day, and there could be no nonell in the water surface when the ships were arriving or departing the quay.
