The project includes dredging and environmental dredging in Forsøl and Fuglenes, as well as extensive covering of contaminated seabed in Hammerfest Harbour. Clean and contaminated masses are handled environmentally and used to fill sheet pile cells, with strict measures to reduce the spread of contamination. NCC, Sjøentreprenøren and FAS are responsible for different parts of the work.
The project is a collaboration between the Norwegian Coastal Administration and Hammerfest Harbour, and consists of several sub-projects where NCC acts as the main contractor. The marine contractor is responsible for the marine work, while FAS handles the sheet piling works.
At Forsøl, the approach to the fish reception centre will be deepened through dredging, blasting, and environmental dredging. In total, 46,000 m³ of clean loose materials will be dredged, 5,000 m³ of solid rock blasted, and 4,000 m³ environmentally dredged. The clean materials are deposited in the sea, while the contaminated materials are transported by sand barge to Hammerfest for use as fill in sheet pile cells. Turbidity meters are used during the implementation to monitor water quality.
At Fuglenes small boat harbour, environmental dredging of 25,000 m³ of materials will be carried out, which will also be used to fill up sheet pile cells. Here too, turbidity meters are used to ensure environmental considerations.
At Hammerfest Harbour, the work includes both hull clearance and covering of 230,000 m² of contaminated seabed in the harbour basin, as well as environmental dredging of 20,000 m³. The contaminated materials are used as fill in sheet pile cells. To limit the spread of pollution, both silt curtains and bubble curtains are used. In addition, the use of a band boat is coordinated, ensuring that half of the cells are filled with clean materials.
