The filling of 500,000 m³ of rock masses to elevation -4 metres lays the foundation for the further development of the light rail. The area will house new pedestrian and cycle paths as well as green spaces. The project was carried out with high precision and environmental consideration.

About the project

The marine contractor, on behalf of NCC, is responsible for the marine works on the project. Using split barges and a tugboat, approximately 500,000 m3 were to be filled. About 50,000 m3 were deposited per month. This contract involved filling up to elevation -4 metres. Later, additional filling was done from land so that the terrain was completely exposed.

The project was carried out with a strong environmental focus. The County Governor imposed conditions on the filling that had to be closely monitored with surveillance and sampling.

The rock materials were transported to the site by truck and then loaded onto the barge. A GPS-based positioning system on the boat/barge ensured that the materials ended up where they should. The position of each individual dump was logged, and the seabed was regularly scanned.

Bybanen Utbygging, as the client, wanted the terrain exposed so that there would be more land area. In the longer term, the tracks for the light rail are planned to run where the current pedestrian and cycle path is located, and a new pedestrian and cycle path along with associated green areas will be established in the area that has now been filled.
